Molecular Characterization, diagnostics and management of Plant Viruses: Viruses are responsible for considerable economic losses in crop productivity on a worldwide basis. We have characterized several virus isolates infecting plants from different regions of India. Banana, widely grown in India has great socio-economic importance. Virus infections in banana plants result in yield loss to complete destruction of crops. Major viruses infecting banana include banana bunchy top virus (BBTV), cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and banana bract mosaic virus (BBrMV). Currently we are working on different strategies including development of transgenic plants for management virus infections in banana.

Studies on multidrug resistant genes among environmental isolates of bacteria:Bacterial infection continues to be one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, attributed in part to the evolution and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes. The emergence of multidrug resistance throughout the world put forward a severe demand of innovative research to detect emergence of new resistant strains and developing preventive strategies aimed at limiting their spread. Environmental isolates especially in pollutes sites do generally harbor these resistance genes in association with heavy metal tolerance genes. Understanding molecular mechanisms behind the resistance would facilitate preserving the effectiveness of current antimicrobials and encouraging the continued development of new ones vital to protecting human health against infectious microbes. Our studies involve understanding the molecular mechanism of heavy metal and antibiotic resistance in environmental isolates of bacteria.
