With a motive to strengthen the technical education in India, JMI Started in 1957 a Civil and Rural Institute, now named as Jamia Polytechnic is one of the oldest departments of Jamia Millia Islamia operative under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology of the University. It is conducting Diploma Engineering courses of 3 years duration in the following branches:
- Diploma in Civil Engineering
- Diploma in Computer Engineering
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering
- Diploma in Electronics Engineering
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
The Diploma Engineering courses are conducted in the evening also under the scheme of continuing education. The evening programs are delivered on self-financing basis for 4-yr duration and their classes are conducted from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on all working days and on weekdays also. Admission to these courses is done through a written test on all India basis followed by an interview.
The University Polytechnic has a dedicated team of teaching faculty of more than 45 teachers. It has got all the necessary facilities I laboratories to impart technical education of Diploma Engineering courses conducted by it. The commitment of teachers for excellence and dedication in teaching provides up-to-date knowledge of the latest technological trends. The laboratory experiments are performed in small groups so that every student gets the required attention. Computer facilities available in the University Polytechnic include well-established computer lab with latest computer Hardware and software.
Our students of Diploma Engineering courses have an edge over the other Polytechnic students as they have regular interaction with the faculty and students of degree courses and have
frequent access to their lab facilities. Reputed companies conduct campus interviews for the students of various branches to full-fill their requirements within the country and abroad.
In order to imbibe the latest from the corporate world, the students periodically organize industrial tours, guest lectures, workshop and seminars involving professionals from the industry. The students are also required to undergo 4-6 weeks industrial training in any industry related to their discipline.
Besides academic activities, the University Polytechnic is aiming at an overall development of the personality of the students by giving adequate attention to co-curricular extra-curricular activities through the departmental Subject Association and other national professional bodies. A great emphasis is placed on participation in sports, academic events such as debate, quizzes, technical discussion, workshops and seminars.
With a vision to impart technical education among women, University is going to start Women's Polytechnic soon. The matter is under review with the UGC.
