About GIAN

The Union Cabinet has approved a new program titled Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) in Higher Education aimed at tapping the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs, internationally to encourage their engagement with the institutes of Higher Education in India so as to augment the country's existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform, and elevate India's scientific and technological capacity to global excellence.

In order to garner the best international experience into our systems of education, enable interaction of students and faculty with the best academic and industry experts from all over the world and also share their experiences and expertise to motivate people to work on Indian problems, , there is a need for a Scheme of International Summer and Winter Term. During the ‘Retreat’ of IITs with Minister of Human Resource Development Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani on 29th June, 2014 at Goa, it was decided that “A system of Guest Lectures by internationally and nationally renowned experts would be evolved....

  • Title: Advances in Power Electronics & Renewable Energy Sources

Overview: In today’s world, the scenario of energy demand is increasing exponentially. This increase leads to the concerns of energy crisis as fossil fuels have limited reservoirs. The other concern is of climate change threats. Renewable energy sources are seen as a solution to these concerns. The main renewable energy sources are solar, wind, fuel cell etc. Power electronics plays a major role in energy conversion from renewable energy sources to electrical energy. The integration of power electronics and renewable energy sources leads to an energy conversion system to meet the energy demand. This renewable energy based generation is of various types like stand alone, grid connected, hybrid etc. This area is very demanding and challenging for industrialists, researchers and governments. Therefore, it is important to interact with the internationally recognized academicians to meet the challenges.....

  • Title: Global Cities Sustainability and Management of the Urban Ecosystem

Overview: The management of urban systems is, key challenge for the developed as well as developing countries, Asia and Europe. The unprecedent and unplanned urban growth particulalry in India has created a dismal condition and has posed serious challange to the urban affairs. This condition may be attributed to the lack of understanding of the complex interaction among the natural, built and socio economic system. Therefore, there is a need for efforts in the enhancement of higher education on urban environmental planning and management challenges for addressing the Global Cities Sustainability. The issue of sustainable management of urbanisation processes and urban development in general is of great interest in all countries and regions of Asia – even though at different scale and scope all partners expect to benefit from sharing experiences of mutual interest. The course aims to address key issues of urban environmental management. The courses shall provide an opportunity to address a selection of these issues in education, taking into consideration Asian and European perspectives, challenges and experiences. The course is a further step in elaborating possibilities of a development of a joint curriculum focusing on urban environmental management....

  • Title: South-South Cooperation: Relations between Latin America and Asia

Overview: The 21st century has witnessed several changes in the balance of power of the international system at the political and economic level, confronting diverse crises, mostly financial in nature.A unipolar world, dominant after the end of the Cold War, is giving way to multipolarity, mainly in the economic arena. In the first decade of the XXIst century, this new multipolarity saw the rise of several emerging economies and a wide variety of other international actors as well as a renaissance of South-South Cooperation (SSC). Nevertheless systemic constraints and economic and financial difficulties have led to “an impasse” in the present trend, showing that these processes are not so linear and that South-South Cooperation is under analysis in this second decade....

  • Title: Smart Sensors and Internet of Things

Overview: Environmental parameters are necessary in several domains, such as home automation, industrial automation, medical aids, mobile healthcare, elderly assistance, intelligent energy management and smart grids, automotive, traffic management, and many others. At present, it is a clear trend to integrate new components and expand the features of the older ones in order to make the whole assembly smarter. Smart sensors are sensors with integrated electronics that can perform one or more of the logic functions, two-way communication, make decisions. Physically, it consists of transduction element, signal conditioning electronics and controller/processor that support some intelligence in a single package. While Internet of Things (IoT) is all about physical items talking to each other, machine-to-machine Communications and person-to-computer communications.Key technologies that will drive the future IoT will be related to smart sensor technologies including wireless sensor network (WSN), Nanotechnology and miniaturization of sensing devices...
