Heavy metal toxicity is one of the major environmental health problems in modern society, with potentially dangerous bioaccumulation through the food chain. When accumulated in excess in plant tissues, these metals can function as stressors causing physiological constraints and alterations in various vital growth processes, such as mineral nutrition, transpiration, photosynthesis, enzyme activities related to metabolism, and biosynthesis of chlorophyll and nucleic acids. My group is interested in studies on ‘Plant-Metal Interactions’ from molecules to ecosystem. Work involves interaction of heavy metals with certain crop plants, metal-binding complexes, role of signaling molecules, toxicity reversal mechanisms, metal-ion interactions with micronutrients, impact of metal-ions on growth, photosynthesis and co-stress phenomena. The interaction of heavy metal with plants are analyzed at physiological, biochemical and molecular level with an aim leading towards phytoremediation or phytotechnology (green technology).
