Introduction

Is a part of the glorious heritage of the Jamia Millia Islamia. From modest beginnings, it blossomed into a full fledged centre of political studies (teaching and research) when its first batch of post graduate students enrolled in 1977. The Department progressed gradually and various new courses and research programmes were initiated, enabling the Department to carve a distinct niche and explore new frontiers in the academic. world. True to its traditions and its ever growing quest for providing an ambience for quality teaching, learning and research, the Department has recruited men and women of distinction in various spheres of specialization in Political Science. The Department is the largest in terms of students and courses offered in the Social Science faculty, with one undergraduate and three post graduate degree programmes. The Department has introduced semester system in its M.A. (Political Science), M.A. (Human Rights) and M.A. (Public Administration) courses from 2010-11. The Department has a vibrant — Ph.D. programme with at least 60 Research Scholars currently enrolled. Throughout the year, besides regular teaching, the Department hosts Seminars, Panel discussions, Workshops, Extension Lectures and Study tours for its students. It has a vibrant Students Association and an excellent Departmental Library.

Ph.D. Research Proposals are invited on all themes of Political Science, Public Administration and Human Rights.
M.A.(Political Science) The M.A. Programme besides offering advanced knowledge in core areas of political science, focuses on specific area studies courses and foreign policy papers with special emphasis on the analytical and methodological aspects of the Discipline.
M.A. (Public Administration) The Post graduate course is first of its kind in the Capital and is addressed largely to those interested in administration, management and development areas. The course is also designed to keep in tune with the civil services syllabi of competitive exams.
M.A. (Human Rights and Duties Education) The postgraduate course is designed to impart the foundational principles of Human Rights with a view to equip the students with practical knowledge to meet the challenges emerging from human rights violations by individuals and institutions.
B.A. (Hons.)Political Science The course is designed to equip the students with the foundations of the subject while opening for them channels to pursue higher studies as well as opt for competitive exams or other career

Public Administration Programme

Public Administration and Management Studies are the up-coming academic areas that have acquired salience and popularity among social science students, particularly students aspiring to make a career in the rapidly changing political economy of India today. The Indian Civil Services are an alternative area of career planning for the students of Public Administration besides the ever expanding private sector of the post liberalization phase.

A Post Graduate Course in Public Administration in Jamia Millia Islamia located in the Capital is first of its kind and the Department of Political Science has the privilege to offer it.

The 16 paper 4 semester based M.A. programme aims to generate the professional skills essential for administrative management and to pursue developmental goals. It is specially designed for both policy planning and implementation. The course format provides contemporary inputs to the field of administration and management that constitute the basis for modern development with a perspective relevant to the developing world. It looks at the journey from Welfare Administration to New Public Management with special emphasis on administrative reforms.

Human Rights Programme

The Department Offers a Post graduate Degree (MA) in Human Rights and Duties Education with 16 courses in 4 semesters. The Department has an excellent Library for Human Rights with more than 300 books. The Department has held several extension lectures besides conducting workshops/seminars/symposia on Human Rights issues. The courses have been designed to give the students not only theoretical knowledge of rights but also practical training in the implementation procedures of human rights. The Department has an excellent Library with books on Research Methodology, Political Science, Human Rights and Public Administration available to Students, teachers and Research Scholars for purposes of academics or research.
