SOE Introduction

The School of Education (SOE), set up under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) launched by hon’ble Prime Minister of India with all India coverage. This scheme was launched in 2014-15 for a period of three years i.e. from 2014-15 to 2016-17.

The Mission is envisaged to address comprehensively all issues related to teachers, teaching, teacher preparation and professional development. The Mission focussed in a holistic manner dealing with the whole sector of education without fragmenting the programmes based on levels and sectors as school, higher education, technical education etc. It will try to bridge the gap between teachers and teacher educators and provide opportunities for teachers to become teacher educators. The Schools of Education will form the main backbone for integrated teacher development across all sectors and to establish School of Education in the Central Universities. The School of Education comprise of several units/centres that would undertake in-depth work in specific areas that have remained neglected in areas of elementary and secondary teacher and school education.

SOE, JMI aims to be a core pace-setting institute to drive the professional development of teachers and teacher educators. It envisions to augment innovation in research and education, particularly in the field of teacher education to address teacher development for all levels of education ranging from elementary to higher education, including technical education. The amount of Rs. 9.50 Crore has been granted to us for the school of education. The vision for the School of Education has been developed through a collaborative process that involved Vice Chancellor, Registrar, other officers and faculty members of department of Education Jamia Millia Islamia. It has been blossoming under the benevolence nurturing of our distinguished Vice-chancellor Prof. Talat Ahmad -a great educationist and an enabling administrator supported by the dynamic academician and rainbow of inspiration Prof. Anita Rastogi, Nodal Officer .

Aims, Objectives and Rationale

The School of Education was set up to achieve the vision of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMMNTT). The school will expand the university’s teaching base and will form the backbone for integrated teacher development across all sectors. This will be achieved through proposed Bachelor and Master degree programme. The School of Education will develop innovation in research and education and will enhance the quality of teacher education.

To develop School of Education within Jamia Millia Islamia as the core pace-setting institution to spear head the professional development of teachers and teacher educators.

Objectives

  • To conduct various academic programmes to meet the teaching requirements of elementary, secondary and higher education.
  • To conduct researches in teacher education, curriculum development, pedagogy, special education, language teaching, etc.
  • To develop as a model institution for teacher education with state of art facilities and human resource expertise.
  • To ensure integrated and inter-sectoral linkages across all levels of the hierarchy of teacher education.
