This Department is a legacy of the UGC and the policy vision of the MHRD to promote professional courses at higher educational level. In fact, in 2004, the UGC has given its approval to start Certificate course in Tourism and Travel Management.
At present the department is running Bachelors degree in Hotel Management, Travel and Tourism and Diploma course in Tourism and Travel Management along with the Certificate course.
Besides this the tourism courses are offered at B.A. Programme and at subsidiary level. The admission on the above programmes are based on written test, Interview as well as (G.D.) Group Discussion.
Every one agrees that at global level this is the sector which has potentiality to offer jobs to the youngsters. As per the statistics released by the UNESCO, in future the tourism sector shall open the vast market for different kind of tourism professionals.
Jamia has tradition and history of nearly 100 years of dedication to work and had contributed to the different development programmes and disciplines. Jamia was established without taking any help from the colonial government and thereby, the founders of Jamia and others taught and worked in Jamia without any financial interests. Rather they spent money from their own pockets. This tradition though receding but still continuing in Jamia. In concise, one can say money or funds are important but dedication and commitment to a cause is more significant. With this culture and outlook several departments and centres have been opened to keep pace with the new developments and innovations in the academic world. With this perspective, a new course Tourism and Hospitality was opened. Getting positive response a full fledged department has been created. Obviously the department has been established with the help and encouragement of UGC, MHRD and Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India.
For Prime Minister’s, ‘National Skill Development Council’, the department is constantly organizing ‘Earn While You Learn’ programmes. Such nine programmes consisting of 120 students in each programme from all over India were conducted. These programmes were funded by the MOT.
Every year, tourists consisting of students and others from Europe and America, visit the department and interact with our students.
The increasing demand to study the subject at domestic as well as global level brought the department to be made sound at academic as well as infrastructural level. In the academic sphere it developed on three fronts:
(ii) Professional training
For enhancing excellence in these courses, a foreign language is being taught. Jamia has very strong foreign language department. From there, we get teaching assistance. Our students who have knowledge of tourism and Arabic and Persian languages are providing services to the medical tourists and the hospitals like Apollo, Escort and Max etc.
Besides teaching foreign languages to our students we also impart CRS (Computerized Reservation System) to the students to enhance the important of the course. These trained students are certainly an asset to our country in general and to Tourism Industry in Particular.
Seeing the success in the employment sector for our passed out students, we are encouraged to expand and strengthen the department. All students are absorbed in one or the other tourism sectors. Some students have got jobs in the international travel companies and they have been posted in the foreign countries. In our sun-rise department we are receiving applications of the foreign students to seek admission in the course. Every year the number of applications are increasing.
