Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies offers an interdisciplinary approach in teaching, contributing towards an understanding of changes in gender relations and gender specific experiences. We draw on a range of disciplines including History, Literature, Political Science, Economics, Social policy/work and Sociology.

For us, Women's Studies as a discipline should be able to do a critical examination of the contemporary lives of women, placing women’s own experiences at the centre from a gender perspective. The main objective is to understand, critique and change the existing structures of patriarchy in all arenas of life such as education, family, religion, work and sexuality. Students of Women’s Studies are encouraged to participate in this transformative process both through academics and activism. The courses in Women’s Studies are designed as an introduction to a range of related and complementary fields of inquiry variously described as women's studies, gender studies and feminist theory among others.

As an academic discipline, Women’s Studies have been introduced in Jamia Millia Islamia as a subsidiary paper for B.A (Hons) students and it is open to the faculty of humanities and the faculty of social sciences. The mode of teaching is interactive and participatory in nature. Apart from lectures, teaching methods include group discussions, film reviewing, article reviewing and presentations.
