Equality, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (EDEI) Policy

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is committed to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and diverse community where every individual is valued, respected, and provided with equal opportunities to thrive. We recognize the richness and strength that diversity brings to our institution, and we are dedicated to upholding principles of equality, equity, fairness, and inclusion in all aspects of university life. This Equality, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy outlines our commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors of all backgrounds.

(A) Equal Opportunity, Equity, and Non-Discrimination

(i) JMI is committed to providing equal opportunities and promoting equity for all individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, socio-economic status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
(ii) Discrimination, harassment, bullying, or victimization of any form will not be tolerated within the university community.
(iii) JMI encourages all employees, students, or members of the public to raise their concerns to the Anti-Discrimination Officer for corrective measures.
(iv) JMI has set up Internal Complaints Cell (ICC) to evolve a mechanism for prevention and redressal of gender based discrimination, sexual harassment and other acts of gender based violence. The ICC has also been mandated to ensure that the provisions of Ordinance 17 (XVII) viz. “Sensitization, Prevention and Redressal of Sexual Harassment (SPARSH)” are implemented in letter and spirit through proper reporting and redressal of the complaints. All complaints involving gender based discrimination or sexual harassment may be made to ICC.


(B) Promotion of Diversity

JMI shall encourage waste reduction through various initiatives:

(i)JMI celebrates and values diversity in all its forms, including but not limited to cultural background, language, beliefs, perspectives, and experiences.
(ii) JMI strives to create an inclusive and equitable environment where different viewpoints are respected and valued, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic learning and working environment.
 

(C) Accessibility, Accommodation, and Equity

(i) JMI is committed to providing reasonable accommodations and support services to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal access to education, facilities, programs, and services.
(ii) Efforts shall be made to remove barriers and improve accessibility across campus for individuals with diverse needs.
(iii) JMI has a provision of reservations in admissions to various programs for persons with disabilities, women candidates and candidates belonging to OBC & ST categories. In case of vacancies under these categories, JMI shall make efforts to ensure that seats under these categories are filled up by launching special campaigns.


(D) Scholarships for Equal Opportunity

JMI is dedicated to providing scholarships and financial aid opportunities to students from underrepresented groups, including but not limited to:
(i) Merit-based scholarships to recognize academic excellence.
(ii)Need-based scholarships to support students from low-income backgrounds.
(iii) Scholarships for students with disabilities to ensure equal access to education.
(iv) Scholarships for students from marginalized communities to promote diversity and inclusion.


(E) Educational and Awareness Initiatives

(i) The university will organize educational programs, workshops, seminars, and events to promote understanding, awareness, and appreciation of diversity and inclusion.
(ii) Training will be provided to faculty, staff, and student leaders on issues related to equality, diversity, unconscious bias, and cultural competency.

(F) Recruitment and Retention

(i) JMI, subject to recruitment rules & provision, is committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
(ii) JMI shall implement fair and transparent recruitment & progression opportunities processes and subject to recruitment rules, actively seek to attract candidates from underrepresented groups.
