Brief Profile: Nandan Nawn in an economist by disciplinary training with a doctoral degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. Classical Political Economy, Ecological Economics and, Environment and Development have been his persistent research interests. He taught at various colleges in University of Delhi in ad-hoc positions (1998-2001) and in regular positions at West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata (2001-14), TERI School of Advanced Studies, New Delhi (2014-22) before joining Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia as a Professor on 01.06.2022.

He has designed/co-designed 13 and taught 21 courses across levels and programmes in four institutions across two cities of India. He has supervised 28 Master’s thesis, 1 M.Phil. dissertation and 1 Ph.D. thesis. His works have been published in Journal of Agrarian Change, Economic and Political Weekly (EPW), Journal of Human Development and Capabilities, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of USA, and Biodiversity Conservation, among others. He has co-edited volumes published by Springer and Sage. He has received doctoral fellowships from UGC at Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, JNU (1997-2001) and ICSSR at Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi (2011-12), a Fulbright Fellowship (2018), an RBI Scholarship (2022), and was an Associate at Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS), Shimla (2006, 2008, 2010).

He has served as Coordinator, School of Social Sciences, NUJS (2004–06), Head, Department of Policy Studies, TERI SAS (2017-18), Secretary, Indian Society for Ecological Economics (INSEE) (2016-18), Managing Editor, Ecology, Economy and Society—the INSEE Journal (2018-21), co-editor, Review of Environment and Development, EPW (2016-20), Coordinator, IQAC, TERI SAS (2018-21), Leader, Bioeconomy programme, Preparatory stage proposal to ‘National Mission on Biodiversity and Human Well-Being’ funded by Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India (2019-21), and Director, ICSSR Sponsored two-week Capacity Building Programme on ‘Academic Writing and Publication Processes’ (2022).
