SENSITISATION WORKSHOP ON

MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS

The Mental Health and Wellness Cell conducted a sensitisation workshop on ‘Mental Health and Wellness’. The Cell has been created keeping the importance of mental wellness, as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court All educational institutions shall adopt and implement a uniform mental health policy, drawing cues from the UMMEED Draft Guidelines.

Commencing with the Tilawat of the Holy Quran, followed by the Jamia Tarana, Chairperson of the Cell, Prof Zubair Meenai welcomed and felicitated the Chief Guest Prof Pankaj Arora, Chairperson, NCTE (National Council for Teacher education) and the resource persons Prof Nimesh Desai, Former Director of  IHBAS (Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences) and Dr Rajesh Kumar, SPYM, (Society for the Promotion of Youth and Masses). Prof Meenai also made the audience aware of the aims of the Cell and introduced the members of the Cell – Prof Samina Bano, Prof Sarika Sharma, Dr Mohd Faijullah Khan, Dr Saba Mahmood Bashir and Dr Irshad Naqvi.

In his Welcome Address, the Registrar, Prof Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi emphasised the importance of mental health and highlighted the various methods for releasing stress. He also talked about how stress was inevitable but what was crucial was how one tackles it.

The Chief Guest of the event, Prof Pankaj Arora spoke on emotional stability along with the fact how mental illnesses are still considered a taboo, and remains engulfed in a culture of silence. Prof Arora underlined the importance if listening too.

The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof Mazhar Asif citing examples from his personal life, spoke on the importance of discipline, being kind to everyone and keep one’s heart pure from all malice. He emphasized on the beauty of relationships, and being connected with one another leads to a stress-free life.

This was followed by two important sessions. Prof Nimesh Desai, Former Director of  IHBAS (Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences) conduct the session on Mental Health where he spoke on the ‘mad, sad and bad’ kinds of issues and how there are different ways to deal with them. Taking simple analogies, that one can relate to, like that of a pressure cooker and a kitchen sink, he interacted the audiences.  

The next session was on Substance Abuse by Dr Rajesh Kumar, SPYM, (Society for the Promotion of Youth and Masses). With the help of a powerpoint and two short films, he spoke on the huge impact of substance abuse on the youth, more so on young women. Dr Kumar also spoke on the stigma associated with it and how the rapid increase globally is largely due to the vested financial interest of certain companies. 

The participants of the workshop, around 150 students, remained attentive and engaged with the two resource persons as well.

The workshop ended with a Vote of Thanks by Dr Faijullah Khan followed by the National Anthem.
