Introduction

The Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia, invites you to a talk by Dr. Nirode Barooah, historian and biographer of Assam's man of destiny -- Gopinath Bardoloi -- on 'Nehru, Assam's Bardoloi and Partition' at the Library/Seminar Room of the Centre's new premises (second floor, MMAJ AIS Annexe) on 12 February 2013 at 3 pm. Prof. R,. Gopinath, Head of the Dept. of History, JMI, will be the discussant and Prof. Sanjoy Hazarika, Director of the NE Centre, will chair.

Bardoloi was Assam's first Premier and post independence CM, who fought doggedly to save Assam from the crisis of Partition and efforts by the Muslim League to seize it for Pakistan through the Grouping process. Bardoloi also stoutly resisted efforts by Congress under Nehru to weaken Assam's case and Dr. Barooah, a meticulous researcher, will throw light on a little known part of India's freedom movement that has not received enough attention from historians and political analysts.  Dr. Barooah is the author of 'India and the Official Germany'; 'David Scott in North-East India 1802-1831: A Study of British Paternalism'; 'Chatto: The Life and Times of an Anti-Imperialist in Europe' and most recently 'Gopinath Bardoloi: The Assam Problem and Nehru's Centre'. He has Phds from London University and Bonn.
