Faiz Ullah is an Associate Professor, Communication Theory and Research, at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Before joining MCRC in October 2025, he was an Assistant Professor at the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Culture, School of Media and Cultural Studies (SMCS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, where he taught courses in media studies, journalism, audio, research methodology, and documentary film, and designed and implemented the Post-graduate Diploma in Community Media. He has supervised several masters and doctoral research theses in the broad domain of media and cultural studies. He was also a part of the founding team, and one of the editors, of the online academic journal for emerging research in media and cultural studies at the SMCS.
Faiz has also worked as a news producer with NDTV and was part of the creative and brand teams at Big FM in Mumbai and Delhi. At Bloomberg TV, Mumbai, he produced several feature and special shows and reviewed books and films for the news cycle. He has also provided consultancy to various civil society organisations in their media production and research and outreach initiatives. Faiz co-directed Under the Open Sky (35 mins, Hindi with English Subtitles, 2016) that follows a women's football team as they negotiate their neighbourhood as well as the larger city. The film has been screened at many festivals and educational institutions in India and abroad.
Faiz is the co-editor of Many Voices, Many Worlds: Critical Perspectives on Community Media in India (Sage Books 2020; republished by Aakar Books in 2024) and co-translator of Intizar Hussain’s Dilli Tha Jiska Naam, published as Once There Was a City Named Dilli (Yoda Press 2017; republished by Simon & Schuster in 2024). His research articles and book chapters have been published in various academic journals and edited volumes. His book reviews and occasional pieces have appeared, among others, in The Book Review India, Biblio, The India Forum, The Indian Express, The Tribune, Mint, Art India, Development & Cooperation, and Time Out.
Faiz’s areas of research include political economy of media, audience studies, sociology of work, digital cultures, community media, documentary film, and translation. He has directed and participated in funded research and media production projects on Digital Citizenship and Gender in Hindi Cinema. Faiz has presented his work at several national and international conferences as well as invited lectures organised by several institutions and film festivals. He has also organised several conferences, seminars, and workshops.
Faiz has a Master's degree in Mass Communication from the AJK MCRC, Jamia and a PhD from TISS.
