Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion

The M.A. in Social Inclusion is an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme offered by the Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion (CSSI), Jamia Millia Islamia, in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The interdisciplinary programme draws upon the disciplines of Political Science, Sociology, History, Law, Public Policy, Gender Studies, Human Rights, and Development Studies. The programme provides a critical understanding of key ides such as inclusion, equity, social justice, and citizenship. The programme is designed to equip students with the theoretical foundations, analytical skills, and research competencies required to address contemporary challenges of inequality, discrimination, and marginalization in India and across the world. The revised curriculum reflects the NEP vision by promoting multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking, academic flexibility, research orientation, and experiential learning.

The programme follows the NEP credit framework with a balanced emphasis on continuous internal assessment, seminar presentations, research projects, field engagement, and end-semester examinations. Students undertake seminar-based learning, research methodology courses, SWAYAM-supported learning, and a substantial dissertation/project during the final semester, enabling them to integrate classroom knowledge with real-world policy and research practices.

Duration: Two Years (Full-time Programme with Research, Seminar Courses and Field-based Learning)

• Examine the structural and institutional dimensions of inequality based on caste, tribe, class, gender, religion, disability, region, ethnicity, migration, and other intersecting identities in line with the vision of NEP 2020.
• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts of social inclusion, marginalization, equity, citizenship and social justice.
• Promote critical engagement with constitutional values, democratic citizenship, human rights, and inclusive public policies.
• Strengthen interdisciplinary research skills through qualitative, quantitative, and advanced research methodologies, fieldwork, and evidence-based policy analysis.
• Foster socially responsible leadership, ethical scholarship, and policy-oriented interventions for building an inclusive and equitable society.

The M.A. in Social Inclusion prepares students for careers in teaching, research, policy analysis, governance, development practice, and advocacy. By integrating theoretical knowledge with research training, seminar-based learning, and field engagement, the programme develops competencies required in academia, public policy, civil society, and international development. The curriculum is designed to enhance critical thinking, policy analysis, communication, and research skills, making graduates well-equipped for diverse professional pathways.
